Beyond National Wellness Month, Take (Self) Care When Traveling

August has been officially named National Wellness Month … but like many of these awareness designations,  31 days seems woefully inadequate for a focus that should be a priority all year long. As the zeitgeist has been shouting since the pandemic, self-care is incredibly important, and worth squeezing into your regular schedule. But that can sometimes (okay, always) be hard when everyday tasks, chores, and domestic emergencies intrude on our pursuit for well-being.

That’s what makes it doubly important to make time for it when on vacation, and why it’s critical to choose a resort that has an extraordinary spa program as well as great accommodation, food, beverage, and leisure options. A resort like El Dorado Seaside Suites or El Dorado Maroma in Riviera Maya.

Both are well known for their romantic, adults-only, More Inclusive™ experience (added values for which vary by property), but they should be equally known for their exemplary Náay Spas.

“We offer a complete menu of wellness treatments,” spokesperson Fernanda Rossano says, which includes body work, skincare, hair, makeup, and massage. Moreover, each of the resorts boast signature and unique services.

For instance, at El Dorado Seaside Suites, guests can book a Temazcal session for an indigenous Mesoamerican sweat lodge experience. A Prehyspanic Ritual that includes face, body, and massage treatments using local herbs is also on the menu. A special Stress Relief Massage incorporates seed pillows into therapeutic massage techniques.

The most comprehensive is the exclusive trio of Balam Experiences, which includes a water journey in the hydrotherapy circuit, Temazcal session or massage, and ends with a full dinner of Mayan dishes. On the menu, you might fine Tobijoloch corn dough stuffed with xcatic chili and tomato sauce, Booxkool stuffed with local seafood, sweet chili, corn, and pumpkin, char-grilled Poc Chuc pork marinated in sour orange juice, and a sweet pumpkin dessert enhanced with spices and crispy pumpkin seed.

El Dorado Maroma also offers the Prehyspanic Ritual and Stress Relief Massage, but their most notable is the Kukulcan Massage. Water journeys are also available here.

Both resorts have plentiful treatment rooms for private services, with 11 and 14 cabins for Seaside Suites and Maroma respectively, but Sky Massages, conducted in beachfront palapas, are another popular relaxation option. So is a day at the salon, with hair, nail, and makeup services available to help guests look as good as they feel after a day at the spa.

… Or at the gym, as the fitness centers at these properties are truly exceptional.

Usage of the fitness centers is free of charge, and a 13-hour day (7 AM to 8 PM) gives folks freedom to work out at a time that best suits their cadence. Within, LifeFitness and Peloton equipment, full squat racks, kettlebells, bodybuilding, and CrossFit equipment to help you bring your WOD south of the border with you. Personal training is also available for those who want guidance.

However, a reset for everyday means learning ways to incorporate movement into your everyday life, outside of set facilities. These El Dorado resorts have dance classes, volleyball, bike tours, and kayak tours around the property, and often incorporate nature into each of those offerings to help keep participants grounded with a sense of place … and a reminder that wellness is year-round at the right resort in the land of eternal August.
